If you've researched weft extensions recently, you've almost certainly landed on this question: hand-tied or Genius Weft? Both are flat. Both are flexible. Both are made with 100% Remi® human hair. Both are installed using the beaded row method. So what's actually different?
The short answer: more than most people realize. And the choice matters — because the wrong weft for a client's goals means an install that doesn't perform as expected, a client who doesn't come back, and a revenue opportunity missed.
Here is the complete, honest breakdown — from the brand that invented both.
Every Bohyme Hand-Tied weft takes 3–5 full days to create. Skilled, trained technicians hand-sew individual hair strands onto a single continuous thread, then knot each section securely to prevent shedding. This process cannot be automated — it requires trained human hands at every step.
The resulting weft is approximately 10–12 inches long and ultra-lightweight. At the ends, the weft is designed to fold over itself rather than be trimmed — this is a critical structural feature, not a workaround.
The golden rule: Never cut a hand-tied weft with scissors. Cutting severs the continuous thread, causing the weft to unravel and individual strands to shed. The weft is designed to fold, not cut.
The Genius Weft was born from a simple question Bohyme posed to extension professionals worldwide: what would your ideal weft look like? The answer shaped every design decision.
The Genius Weft construction blends elements of Seamless and Hand-Tied technology — producing a weft that is thinner than hand-tied, has zero return hair, and can be cut anywhere along its length without fraying. This is achieved through a proprietary construction method that produces a self-sealing weft edge, eliminating the need for the folded-end design of hand-tied.

When to Choose Hand-Tied
Choose Hand-Tied when your client wants dimensional color.
The intentionally lower density of the hand-tied weft means that when multiple wefts of different colors are layered, each shade has space to show through. The result is a multi-dimensional blend that looks like it was grown that way — balayage effects, shadow roots, and lived-in color are all more achievable with hand-tied layering.
Choose Hand-Tied for the most natural-feeling move.
Because hand-tied wefts are individually sewn and lighter in density, many clients describe the movement as indistinguishable from their natural hair. The weft doesn't sit as a solid panel — it moves strand by strand.
Choose Hand-Tied for Private Reserve quality.
Bohyme's Private Reserve collection — featuring Virgin Remi® hair with full thickness from root to tip and a 9–12 month wear expectation — is only available in hand-tied format. For the absolute premium install, hand-tied is the answer.
When to Choose Genius Weft
Choose Genius Weft when thickness is the #1 priority.
If a client comes in saying 'I just want my hair to feel fuller and thicker' — Genius Weft is the answer. Its higher density delivers volume more efficiently per weft row than hand-tied.
Choose Genius Weft for precise head-fitting.
Because the Genius Weft can be cut to exact sizes at every appointment, stylists can fit it precisely to a client's head shape, section widths, and specific placement needs. This level of customization is simply not possible with hand-tied.
Choose Genius Weft for sensitive scalp clients.
The zero return hair design means there is no folded edge pressing against the scalp. For clients who have ever complained about discomfort from weft edges, Genius Weft resolves this entirely.
The Pro Move: Use Both
The most sophisticated extension stylists don't choose between hand-tied and Genius Weft — they use both in the same install. A common approach:
- Genius Weft rows at the nape and mid-section for density and thickness
- Hand-Tied rows layered with multiple shades in the upper sections for dimensional color and natural movement
This combination produces maximum volume, maximum color dimension, and the most natural-looking result. It requires a higher skill level — but it's a powerful premium service differentiator for your salon menu.

QUICK DECISION GUIDE Client wants thickness above all else → Genius Weft. Client wants multi-shade color blending → Hand-Tied. Client has sensitive scalp → Genius Weft. Client wants luxury 9–12 month Private Reserve install → Hand-Tied. Client wants both → use both. |
Is Genius Weft more expensive than hand-tied?
Pricing varies by collection. Ethos Genius Weft and Ethos Hand-Tied wefts are priced at comparable premium levels. Luxe versions of both are available at a slightly lower price point. Check current pricing through your Bohyme professional account or authorized retailer.
Can I mix Genius Weft and Hand-Tied wefts in the same install?
Yes — and it's actually one of the recommended techniques for advanced stylists who want to combine the density benefit of Genius Weft with the color-blending superiority of Hand-Tied. Both are installed using compatible methods and sit comfortably together in a single service.
Which weft is better for fine hair?
Both work for fine hair, but the deciding factor is the client's goal. If they want thickness, Genius Weft. If they want lightweight color dimension without heaviness, Hand-Tied. For very fine hair, seamless weft tape-ins may also be worth considering.
