It is a common concern with hair extensions whether if you can sit out in the sun and go swimming without causing significant damage to your hair. Good news is, swimming won’t damage the bonds of your hair extensions. Bad news is, salt and chlorine can strip color and nutrient from your hair and cause unintended color change or dry out your hair extensions.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your summer vacation in style. Like your natural hair, it is important to use necessary products and follow  guidelines to minimize damage and ensure the health and longevity of your Bohyme® hair extensions.

Tip #1: Protect with a Swim Cap

Whether you're hitting the beach or the pool, safeguard your hair extensions from the damaging effects of salt and chlorine. A swim cap provides excellent protection, but if you prefer to go without one, prep your hair with UV protective shampoo and conditioner before swimming. Consider using leave-in hair products with SPF for added defense against the sun.

Tip #2: Avoid Prolonged Wetness

Excessive exposure to water can weaken hair extensions. Limit the time your extensions spend immersed in water to no more than two hours. After swimming, promptly wash your hair with sulfate-free or UV protective shampoo and conditioner to remove chlorine or salt residues.

Tip #3: Handle with Care in Heat

High temperatures can compromise the bonds of your hair extensions, especially for methods like i-tips, tape-ins, or glue-ins. Avoid pulling or tugging at your hair extensions when it's hot. Instead, gently brush your hair once it's cooled down to prevent any stress on the bonds.

Tip #4: Hydrate and Detangle Regularly

Keep your hair extensions hydrated and tangle-free by drying and combing them regularly. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle gently, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots. This routine maintenance prevents knots and maintains the health of your extensions.

Tip #5: Understanding Chlorine Damage

Chlorine is a chemical used in swimming pools to kill harmful bacteria. Unfortunately, it can also strip the natural oils from your hair and hair extensions, leaving them dry, brittle, and prone to breakage. Additionally, chlorine can cause unwanted color changes, such as a greenish tint, especially in lighter hair shades. Properly rinsing your hair after swimming and using chlorine-neutralizing or clarifying shampoos can help mitigate these effects.

Tip #6: Post-Swimming Care

After swimming, ensure thorough rinsing to remove all chlorine or salt water from your hair. This prevents buildup that can lead to dryness or discoloration. Opt for sulfate-free products that are gentle on your Bohyme® hair extensions, preserving their color and texture.
